Research - Reading

Early Reading Predictors

The two best predictions of early reading success are alphabet recognition and phonemic awareness. (Adams, 1990)

Phonics

The most comprehensive reading program explicitly teaches about the sound of language. It teaches children that words can be broken up into these smaller units of language, that letters represent these units of language - phonics. (Shaywitz, 1999)

Modern Reading Research

One of the most robust findings of modern reading research is that proficient reading is strongly associated with the ability to identify, remember, and sequence phonemes. (Moats, 2012)

Research - Math

Math Predicts Reading Success

Early knowledge of math not only predicts later success in math, but also predicts later reading achievement even better than early reading skills. (Clements and Sarama, 2013)

Preschool Math Predicts High School Success

Preschool mathematics knowledge predicts achievement even into high

school. (Stevenson and Newman, 1986)

High-Quality Counts

High-quality instruction

has meaningful effects on children’s

mathematics knowledge. (Clements and Sarama, 2011)
